A healthy spiritual life is like a healthy diet – it needs to be balanced. In our spiritual lives, the major food groups are worship, fellowship, Sabbath rest, service and education. If we neglect one area, our overall spiritual health tends to suffer. As such, education is a vital element in faith-filled living. It nourishes us and equips us for our everyday lives in the real world.
We believe good Christian education always starts with who God is – Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. Our God is a God who wants to be known and in right relation with us. We know God best through the pages of the Bible. All of our educational opportunities strive to be Biblical in nature. Yet as those called to be Christ’s body in the world, we never stop with scripture. Our education program endeavors to prepare people of faith for the world in which we live, whether it be teaching us to be more loving, to engage critically with our culture, or to work for reconciliation in this broken world.
Christian education is a priority at Swarthmore Presbyertian Church. We seek to offer faithful, engaging and thought-provoking learning opportunities for God’s children of all ages, from the youngest to the oldest. The heart of our educational program for youth and adults is the 9 am to 10 am education hour on Sunday mornings from September through May. Adult classes meet in Fellowship Hall and in the Study and are open to all who are interested. Middle schoolers meet in McCahan Hall and children ages 4 through 5th grade are encouraged to participate in our Children's choirs, which rehearse at this time.
The heart of our educational programs for children two years old through 5th grade lies in the Church School classes that meet during the 10:15 am worship service. There are also groups that meet at other times, including Education for Ministry for adults and Presbyterian Women bible studies.
We are always in need of teachers and learners at SPC, and hope you will consider being one, the other or both with us. If you have questions, please contact our Associate Pastor for Christian Education and Youth, Rev. John Weicher, at john.weicher@swarthmorepres.org or 610-543-4712 x119.
